This blog is supposed to feature my poems, so I am puting this one in even though I am not satisfied with it. Maybe nobody can keep up to the standard of their best writing all the time! I’m sure I can’t, but the important thing is to keep trying for that elusive excellence.
Strong medicine
Life is a mixture, shaken and stirred.
Sweet, sour, astringent, intoxicating, maddening!
Hoping for refreshment, nourishment, enlightenment,
we gulp or sip according to our needs.
Our thirst for love is there from birth, and never ends,
but what we get is blended and uncertain,
a mix of satisfaction and disappointment, joy and pain.
Food we cannot do without, and some know hunger
while others never starve, but live with plenty and grow fat.
Sex is a main component of our genes, so most of us
are driven to seek it, to reproduce, to live in amity,
or simply to impregnate as many as we can.
Some will eschew it, but most of us will feel compelled
to experience and express it in some way,
and so there will be songs and poems, families,
great art, and also crimes of passion, stories, homes,
and every other kind of outlet for the energy of life.
